A frequently asked question, whether at interview stage, choosing a career, possibly contemplating a move from industry, or just socially over dinner, people often want to know "what actually makes a good recruitment consultant?" and also "what exactly do you do all day"?
When I look at our top performers and those that have been successful in the past, they often have quite different backgrounds, education and personality traits. However here are the commonalities of personal skills I am convinced they share:
Working with people means they can sometimes be unpredictable. Top performers stay calm under pressure, they don't react negatively in challenging situations and are in control of their emotions. With this calmness people associate dependability.
Top performers are accountable and don't leave a client, candidate or colleague in limbo; they follow through on what they say they are going to do. They take responsibility for their mistakes, and seek to fix them without fuss or blame. Their view of what is the ‘right thing’ is not at odds with others.
Top performers will have great empathy and understanding and the ability to connect with people. This allows them to influence and build relationships with the clients and candidates they work with. There is no arrogance or insensitivity demonstrated in anything they do. They wish for a ‘win-win’ situation in all dealings with people.
Integrity and trustworthiness
Their integrity means that it is not 'be the best at any cost'. They are honest and work on the task in hand considering their actions and how these effect those around them; their colleagues, candidates and clients. Their clients and candidates naturally trust their opinion, as they demonstrate integrity at all times.
Building bonds and networking
The ability to get on with diverse people is key, and naturally being someone that reaches out to develop their business network separates the great from the good.
I have never meet a successful recruiter that doesn't work really hard, who is smart, prioritises their time, is meticulous and loves setting personal and business goals and delivering on them!
